Briar Cottage, The Green, Walberswick - Sleeps 6    Website for Briar Cottage

This stylish and spacious house has a prime location on the picturesque village green in the seaside village of Walberswick, perhaps Suffolk’s most sought after village, just across the river from Southwold.  The village has a sandy beach (popular with swimmers!).  It has two good pubs, is surrounded by internationally recognised wildlife habitiats and is home to the National Crabbing Championships each summer.

Briar Cottage is situated in the much loved seaside village of Walberwick, just over the River Blyth from Southwold.  A footbridge connects the two places and in the summer months there is often a rowing boat ferry service across the river.  There are two pubs, The Anchor and The Bell.  The Anchor specialises in local and season foods and has a delicious menu.  There are also a number of small gift shops and two cafes. The village green has swings for children. Crabbing is a popular pastime for children along the riverside.

The property has a spacious open plan living/kitchen/dining room with big windows, two bedrooms (a king and a twin), an en-suite bathroom and a shower room.  See website for more details

A Breath of Fresh Air

Juliet Blaxland - Cold SwimmersJuliet Blaxland - Mad HuttersJuliet Blaxland - Love Southwold

Southwold architect and artist Juliet Blaxland, who lives on the cliffs at Easton Bavents, has just launched a bright and breezy new website selling high quality prints from her quirky seaside paintings and photomontages. Many of these images are understatedly hilarious in an old-fashioned sort of way, celebrating a collective British stoicism in the face of everything going slightly wrong. Swimmers are cold, picnics are wet, chips are stolen by seagulls, but still everyone claims to be "Having a wonderful time!". For a more reflective mood there are also some atmospheric, almost abstract, depictions of the empty beach at night and in winter. Commercially published postcards from the series are currently for sale at typical seaside postcard shops countrywide, including in Southwold. Ideal for jollying up spare rooms, holiday houses and coastal businesses, A3 signed prints from more than 60 of these refreshing pictures are available at the gloom-busting price of £15 each, from www.julietblaxland.co.uk.

John Tookey, Exhibition - ‘Distinctly Tookey’ - 12th to 21st June 2009

John TookeyJohn’s brush strokes display immense freedom, yet he captures, without doubt, the mood and movement of his subject matter, even when looking deceptively simplistic. His palette is distinctly Tookey, his perspective superb.

Exhibitions include the Royal Institute of water colourist, Pastel Society and the Royal institute.

His work is included in many publications and is held in national and international corporate and private collections.

The Southwold - Walberswick Ferry
A new book by Dani Church and Ann Gander

Ferrywoman Dani Church is a familiar sight as she rows locals and tourists across the River Blyth, but few people realise that there is a fascinating history behind the service, going back to at least the 13th century. Now Dani, with the help of author-publisher Ann Gander, has put together a book telling all about the history of the ferry and of the ferrymen and women who have worked the route.

Read more about the story of the Southwold-Walberswick ferry.
